Seroquel for anxiety is an antipsychotic drug that relieves your schizophrenia and depression efficiently. You may suffer from anxiety and schizophrenia and your physician prescribed you Seroquel.   In 2010 in the USA it was the fifth most selling medication. The active ingredient of Seroquel is Quetiapine. It is available in both extended and immediate formulations. It is also introduced to non-psychiatrists for off-label uses. Seroquel has both positive and negative impacts on thoughts and emotions. As it’s an antipsychotic drug so it must be used carefully according to the prescription of the healthcare provider.

FDA-Approved Uses:

As Seroquel is also used off-label for the treatment of anxiety and depression. But FDA has approved that Seroquel is safe for the following uses:

  • Schizophrenia:

It’s a mental disorder in which a person shows abnormal behaviors like hallucinations and delusions. Quetiapine plays an effective role in the treatment of this condition.

  • Bipolar Disorders:

These are the conditions in which a person shows either extreme sadness or overwhelming joy. The symptoms may vary from person to person. Seroquel is more effective for 10-year-old bipolar children.

  • Depression:

Seroquel helps to lower depressive conditions as it works on serotonin and dopamine. But if it’s not used properly as prescribed by the physician it can have adverse effects.

How does it work?

There are two mechanisms on which Seroquel works.

  1. Dopamine is present in the brain and aids in controlling the thoughts of a person. In some conditions the level of dopamine is imbalanced. So Seroquel binds with its receptors and stops its improper functions that can cause schizophrenia.
  1. Serotonin is also a signaling molecule in the brain. To stop its unusual binding with its receptors, Seroquel blocks its receptors. And hence it helps in the prevention of depressive conditions.

Off-Label Prescription for Anxiety:

Seroquel is not approved by the FDA for the treatment of anxiety. It can be effective for treating certain mental disorders. But some drugs can also be used “off-label”. You may have heard this term, if not then let me explain. Off-label means not approved by FDA. The most common off-label use of quetiapine is Generalized anxiety disorder. In 2016, a meta-analysis on quetiapine showed that quetiapine is effective for the treatment of GAD (Generalized Anxiety Disorders). Despite its effectiveness for anxiety, it can also have severe adverse effects in some individuals. Therefore, never use it without a doctor’s consultation.

Dosage: How much is okay?

As Seroquel is not approved for anxiety by FDA so the manufacturer does not provide its proper dosage guidelines. It must be used according to the instructions of the physician. The recommended dosage of Seroquel is 400-800mg/day. We should understand that antipsychotic drugs need a lot of precautionary measures for their use. Avoid too much usage and also long-term use. Psychiatrists should prescribe this pill with much care as its adverse effects are almost irreversible.

Complications:

Improper use of Seroquel leads to severe complications like:

  • Overdoses due to off-labeling of Seroquel causes 20% of deaths in adults.
  • Improper use of quetiapine triggers the condition of insulin resistance.
  • A patient using this antipsychotic drug can suffer from hyperglycemia and dyslipidemia.
  • Chances of sudden death may increase due to misguided usage of Seroquel.
  • In older adults it causes imbalance and they may suffer from hip fractures, strokes, and heart disorders due to sudden accidents.
  • Quetiapine can cause addiction in some persons being prescribed or un-prescribed.
  • It can also elevate suicidal thoughts in some individuals.

Conclusion:

As the strongest antipsychotic drug, quetiapine is the selling drug in the World. In 2021 its revenue was 92 million US dollars. There are limited approved uses of Seroquel but it has been used off-label for so many other conditions. We should understand that the off-label prescription of Seroquel is not supported by strong evidence. That’s the reason for its detrimental effects on cardiovascular and other psychic patients. To address this condition the authorities should support psychiatrists and other medical persons for better research. Until this had happened use Seroquel according to the recommendations of the physician.
